HEROES: PART 1

The movie AMERICAN SNIPER has generated a lot of discussion about heroes. Who are they? What makes a true hero? How do they influence/inspire others? If you asked ten people to name their heroes, chances are they will choose from a long list of well-known people who have made significant contributions to society. Or they might pick someone from the fields of sports or entertainment.

DaddyWhen I think of my own heroes, the first person who comes to my mind is my daddy. He was a gentle man of great character, a farmer who taught me to respect the land and everything living thing on it. I loved nothing better than running along beside him as he walked the land, naming trees and wildflowers and birds. Though he was a small man, he had a big stride to match his big heart, and I was always hurrying to keep up. I still move that way, as if I’m excited about going someplace and can’t wait to get there.

Daddy set an example for me of hard work, honesty, fair-mindedness, humbleness and generosity. There was always a stray dog or cat who wandered onto the farm and found a paradise because of my daddy. He collected people the same way. He always helped them, no matter what kind of problems they had.

Most of all my daddy taught me to be kind. If I had to describe him in one word it would be exactly that – kind. Though I admire great composers, great inventors and great leaders, there is still one who stands above them all – my daddy, my hero.

Tell me about your heroes. Who are they and why do you admire them?
